Cosworth’s 1000 HP Street-Legal V-12

Cosworths 1000hp street legal V 12

The British automotive engineering firm Cosworth has gone and produced a 1,000 hp street-legal V12 engine for Aston Martin. The company has been known to make engines and they have proven their mettle in the motorsports world. Cosworth has entered engines in Formula One, Formula 2, Formula 3, and IndyCar among other championships.

Aston Martin asked the British company to make a powerful naturally aspirated engine for their Aston Martin Valkyrie supercar and Cosworth did not disappoint. With their experience in making reliable engines for the motorsport sector, Cosworth produced something beautiful.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie that made its debut at the Silverstone racing track in England last year will house this powerful engine. The Valkyrie has been made in partnership with the Redbull Racing Formula One team. This monstrous car will reportedly cost 2.5 million pounds.

The engine that will power the Valkyrie will be a 6.2 liter naturally aspirated beast. This engine will reportedly be able to reach up to and over 12,000 rpm! The vehicle will reach its peak 1,000 hp output at 11,100 RPM. Taking into account all these factors it would not be wrong to call the upcoming Valkyrie the top contender for the fastest car in the world title.

Most other cars in the hypercar category reach high power outputs either by adding a lot of cylinders to the mix or by adding more than one turbocharger to get things going. This Cosworth 1,000 hp V12 engine does not have too many cylinders, neither is it too large not does it have any turbochargers or superchargers. A naturally aspirated 1,000 hp engine is extremely rare, so the one we shall see in the Valkyrie will be one of a kind.

To top all that, the Aston Martin Valkyrie will be a street-legal vehicle. We expect that to be a challenge for the manufacturers since a V12 engine is extremely loud in itself. However, it is hard to imagine how to vehicle will stay quiet at 12,000 RPMs. Perhaps we will be able to hear the F1 sound reimagined and redefined. The Formula One governing body, the FIA, ditched the use of V12s quite a few seasons ago seeing as them as old technology. However, Cosworth has proved here that V12s are still pretty chic and capable as ever before. Perhaps the FIA is impressed with the performance of the Aston Martin Valkyrie and they allow a smaller displacement V12 hybrid to the future cars but that remains to be seen.
