BMW is the First Carmaker That Received Approval for Level 2 and Level 3 on Autonomous Driving Technology

News regarding the evolution of autonomous driving technology does not hesitate to appear, and now we have an approved technological advance for BMW technology.

Great news for BMW! It is now the first manufacturer that received approval for Level 2 and Level 3 of autonomous driving technology.

Level 2: BMW Highway Assistant – Driving Assistance System
Level 3: BMW Personal Pilot

Both levels are now available in the new BMW 7 Series and are now setting a new step in the automated driving technology area.

BMW Highway Assistant (Level 2)

This is the Level 2 feature which is one level higher than the base model and provides much more comfort on long ride especially because it can be used at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph). The BMW Highway Assistant is an enhancement to the steering and lane control and is enabled on the motorways with structural separation of the lanes. Such roads allow the driver to lift his or her hands from the steering wheel and place them in whatever comfortable position he or she desires, as long as the driver remains conscious of what is going on on the road in order to be able to regain control of the steering whenever is necessary.

Even in the case of partially automated driving, the BMW 7 Series also has the ability to change lanes and not ask the driver to take the wheel again. This is made possible by the Active Lane Change Assistant which controls the steering and accelerates/decelerates the vehicle as soon as the traffic conditions allow the overtaking maneuver. Also, when the driver wants to perform a lane change suggested by this system, he or she only has to check the exterior mirror in order to do so.

BMW Personal Pilot (Level 3)

The third level of automation is one where the driver is able to fully let go of the controls and set his or her sights on something else.

The BMW Personal Pilot Level 3 that is available in the BMW 7-Series offers drivers a completely new way of driving as the car can manage all the control and the driver can safely look away from the road at speeds of up to 60 km/h.

Hybrid systems can completely manage the car at times of traffic jams on the motorway. That is, this even allows drivers to do other things inside the car, for instance, using the phone, reading, composing messages, working, or watching videos.

But the driver should always be able to take control of the vehicle fairly quickly – within a few seconds, possibly at a roadworks sign.

All these driving assistance systems integrated into one car can be considered as a great leap forward and provide the driver and passengers with a complete list of options to make the trip comfortable both on short and long distances.

Currently, BMW is leading the world by introducing a new generation of the BMW 7 Series and applying both systems in the car, according to Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President of Driving Experience of BMW Group. “This way, we are reinforcing the idea that our clients will receive a safe, comfortable, and innovative car ride experience.”

The BMW Highway Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional are both under the BMW Personal Pilot Level 3 which is only available in Germany and is sold at €6,000 (incl. VAT).

Owners of cars delivered with the BMW Personal Pilot Level 3 option will be able to upgrade the function of the BMW Highway Assistant free of charge starting 08/24.
