How the F-150 Lightning Pushed its Way to the Front of the Electric Truck Market

Ford F 150 Lightning

The Tesla Model S was the best-selling luxury car in the United States for 2018. However, Tesla’s success does not guarantee that its Cybertruck will dominate the truck market. That marketplace is changing as Ford competes with its new electric truck, the Ford F-150 Lightning.

Teslas are known for their cutting-edge technology and sleek design. The long-awaited Cybertruck has an unusual design that really doesn’t look like anything on the road. This will make it popular with some sci-fi fans, but Ford is betting that its sleek F150 electric truck will attract more attention from pickup truck enthusiasts and the business world.

The F-150 is known for its toughness and durability. Its style and functions are well known. In fact, the truck is the best-selling vehicle in the United States. Perhaps that’s why the Lightning reservation system has been put on hold while the factories work to match the demand.

Electric F-150s can go from 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds, making the Lightning one of the fastest electric trucks on the market. While having a speedy nature is important to most driving enthusiasts, pickup truck owners know the truck also has to be capable.

Payload and towing are rated at 7,000 pounds for the F-150 EV. This makes it useful to those who need to tow or carry heavy loads. Unlike Tesla, Ford trucks are known for extensive trailing technologies. The Ford pro trailer hitch makes hookup easier, and the new Smart Hitch will help users balance the tongue weight for safe trailing.

Range and charging ability is another area where Ford could lag behind the more practiced Tesla.  However, the Ford range is competitive with the Tesla Cybertruck at both the entry-level and the advanced level.

There was some talk that consumers would trust Tesla more if buying an electric vehicle. However, Tesla’s reputation has suffered from consumer complaints while Ford’s models have reputations of good, better, and best.

Range and charging ability is another area where Ford could lag behind the more practiced Tesla.  However, the Ford range is competitive with the Tesla Cybertruck whether it’s the entry-level battery or the advanced battery.  This fact allows shoppers to choose the truck they like best for the money without sacrificing in these critical areas.

Ford engineers put great care into the truck’s energy consumption. It consumes almost half of what the Tesla Model S would use. When it comes to charging, the Lightning can charge from 15 to 80 percent in about ten minutes.  Unlike the Hummer EV, the charging port is at the driver’s front, making it easily accessible and convenient.

Truck pricing tracks with Ford and Tesla offering similar range and capability at the entry and advanced level. Compared to how Tesla entered the car market years ago, current pricing by these two rivals demonstrates that it is possible for people to buy a worthwhile electric truck without breaking the bank.

One only needs around $40,000 to purchase, making the Ford model more affordable than other electric trucks on the market. This is more pocket friendly than the Hummer EV, which has a starting price of around $112,595 and Rivian R1T of about $73,000.

Conclusion

With its new electric motor, impressive performance, and affordable price tag, the Ford F-150 Lightning is likely to appeal to people looking for an electric truck that is fast, long-range, and affordable. It remains to be seen if it will help Ford continue its pickup truck market dominance. So far, the future looks quite bright for the aptly named Lightning.
