A British company, McLaren, has recalled supercars due to complaints of fire. The company also released a statement on the issue, advising customers to return their McLarens to the dealerships due to safety concerns. The company recalls around 2800 cars, including the McLaren Senna, 720S, and others.
Affected are all the vehicles sold between 2016 and 2020. Similarly, 570GT and GT of the 2017–2019 and 2020 models are also affected. Based on reliable information, the fire problem is caused by the foam padding under the fuel tank. Such foam is water-absorbent and that leads to the fuel tank corroding. The tank spills gas and then that, in the end, causes a fire. The company equips the foam pad to reduce road noise and keep the cabin clean.
A pair of their double vehicles presented by the same problem alerted Mclaren to the danger represented by the foam. They made a call to safeguard their customers as well as their reputation by recalling all relevant vehicles. As per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US, McLaren has promised to replace the foam and the corroded fuel tank free of charge.
The rest of the McLaren cars that do not feature the foam padding have not been recalled. The 720S is the hardest hit by the choice. However, in terms of reputation hit, the million-dollar Mclaren Senna, named after the legendary Formula One driver Ayrton Senna, is the worst affected. Senna is a product line in the limited series, with only 500 units produced and sold. The concept of a road-legal car, while at the same time, being a competitive performance car, got extra special attention from the manufacturers. The Senna was designed with speed in mind and it appears the part.
The entire car has been built with carbon fiber to minimize weight and a hungry engine sleeps inside. Once awakened, the roaring 4.0-liter dual-turbo V8 engine makes 789 hp with 590 lbs of torque and goes from naught to sixty in just 2.8 seconds. Top speed stands at 211 mph. McLaren has gone a step further and imagined a track-only Senna that is called the Senna GTR. This car will have even more downforce than before and also more horsepower. The British marque planned to build 75 of these and all of them were sold in record time.
The company has yet to send a formal notice to their customers but we expect that to happen soon.
